It isn't confusing at all, just go to Renders and look in there.

I don't think many of us use brushes much anymore.
Do you want them to do the whole background? Or just for effects?

It's easy enough to make custom smudge brushes just for a few effects here and there.
Wanna know how?

I just do smude most of the time.. SOME times i use brushes for the BG then i smudge a lil bit like

Well just make a new document, say 50 x 50 on a transparent background.
Get a standard font such as Times New Roman and just put an "X" or some other letter that's similar to that on the canvas.
Go Edit > Define Brush Present then name the brush.
Done.

Well there's a smalla mount of smudging in my current sig, barely noticeable but just a blended bit out from the render, don't think you can really see it.
