The Mars Volta’s first album produced by Rick Rubin with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is a landmark in music. A rapid change from the punk style of At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta is more progressive rock.
This concept album is based on a short story by lead singer Cedric Bixler Zavala. It’s a story of a man who tries to kill himself by overdosing on morphine. The attempt lands him in a week-long coma during which he experiences visions of humanity and his own psyche. Upon waking, he is dissatisfied with the real world and finally kills himself.
There are two very special guest appearances on the album, Flea & John Frusciante of the ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’. Flea recorded all the bass on the album. John contributed various guitar parts and the synthesizer parts found on 'Cicatriz ESP'
The short introduction of ‘Son et Lumiere’ is really abstract which flows right into ‘Inertiatic Esp’. The album does have some long instrumental parts in the middle of songs for example ‘Cicatriz Esp’ but this really builds the songs as they have great structure.
Standout tracks for me are: ‘Inertiatic Esp’ ‘Drunkship Of Lanterns’ ‘Eriatarka’ ‘Cicatriz Esp’ and ‘Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt’. Haunting yet exciting atmosphere, stunning music and inspiring lyrics, seriously buy this.
